About this position
This postdoctoral project is part of the ANR De-Chalco programme, which investigates chalconatronite, a corrosion product associated with small-scale Egyptian statuary conserved in museums in France, with the aim of proposing a treatment.
The researcher will work on the preparation of model samples for laboratory experiments, using information on alloy compositions and manufacturing techniques to select natural ores and produce bronze specimens that are representative of ancient material-making practices.
The work is rooted in experimental archaeology and archaeometallurgy, with sample production carried out on the experimental archaeology platform of IRAMAT in Melle. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to defining and implementing an experimental protocol for the production of copper-based metal and alloy analogues.
Day-to-day activities include laboratory and off-site work in museums and at the Melle experimental platform, establishing a state of the art on Egyptian bronzes and experimental approaches to ancient metal production, and carrying out the analogue production itself under controlled conditions.
Quality control is integrated throughout the production chain using pXRF, MEB-EDS, XRF and XRD. The project is collaborative and brings together IRAMAT UMR 7065, LASIE at the University of La Rochelle, the Arc’Antique laboratory, and HiCSA at Université Panthéon-Sorbonne Paris 1. The researcher will be based at IRAMAT Saclay and will also work regularly at Melle and occasionally at partner sites.
