About this position
This postdoctoral research position is part of the CoLiFlow project, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), and focuses on the physical mechanisms governing the formation, stability and dynamics of foams in mixtures of organic liquids.
The project sits at the intersection of soft matter physics, interfacial physico-chemistry and fluid mechanics. The researcher will investigate how liquid properties and flow conditions influence foam formation and lifetime, addressing unresolved questions concerning drainage, stability and destabilisation in complex foam systems. The work will combine original experiments with theoretical modelling to establish predictive links between macroscopic foam behavior, the physicochemical properties of liquid mixtures and processes occurring at the liquid-film scale.
The researcher will design and conduct experiments on foam formation, stability and drainage in hydrocarbon mixtures using Bikerman columns and controlled depressurisation experiments. Additional studies will characterize gas–liquid flow dynamics in vertical columns under different operating conditions, including changes in hydrocarbon composition, viscosity, gas flow rate and pressure.
Key research activities include quantitative measurements of foam height, liquid-fraction profiles and flow characteristics, followed by data analysis, image processing, theoretical-model development and validation. The researcher will interpret experimental results and disseminate findings through scientific publications and conference presentations.
The research will be conducted at PICte, a joint laboratory established by ESPCI Paris – PSL and TotalEnergies at the TotalEnergies research site in Lacq, France. The position offers an interdisciplinary research environment combining academic expertise with industrial experience, access to experimental facilities and close collaboration with scientists and engineers from both institutions. The research has relevance to fundamental foam physics as well as industrial applications involving complex fluid and gas–liquid systems.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related field. A sound knowledge of fluid mechanics, soft matter physics or multiphase flows is required. Experience in experimental fluid dynamics, especially foams, emulsions or gas-liquid flows, is highly desirable. Skills in experimental design, quantitative data analysis, image processing and numerical modelling using tools such as MATLAB or Python are desirable. Candidates should demonstrate scientific curiosity, independence, strong analytical skills, collaborative ability and good communication skills. Fluency in spoken and written English is required, and fluency in French is essential. The expected research experience is 1–4 years.
