About this position

The University of Turku is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to study how human mobility and infectious disease spread have been shaped by ecological and social factors. The position is based in the Department of Biology and is part of the Human Diversity Centre of Excellence, an interdisciplinary research consortium funded by the Research Council of Finland.

The project investigates past human contacts, including migration rates between local communities, and how these movements influenced the spread of infectious diseases. The researcher will work with unique national-level digitized data covering Finnish migrations and causes of death during the 19th century, together with digitized road networks, waterways and historical travel routes.

The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Professor Virpi Lummaa within LummaaLab and will collaborate closely with other Human Diversity research groups. The wider consortium combines evolutionary language sciences, archaeogenomics, evolutionary demography, digital linguistics and natural language processing to understand how contacts, environments and communication networks have shaped human diversity.

The role includes combining diverse datasets generated by the Human Diversity teams and overseeing the production and curation of new datasets. It offers an opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary research linking evolutionary biology, ecology, demography, geography, spatial analysis and infectious disease research.

The Department of Biology studies life and biological evolution across terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, using empirical field and laboratory approaches to investigate individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems. The successful researcher will join an international, collaborative and multidisciplinary academic environment within the Faculty of Science.
