About this position
University of Twente is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for a project on integrating In-Well Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) with seismological stations for offshore near-real-time monitoring.
The work sits at the intersection of Earth science, seismology, geophysics, signal processing, machine learning, and geospatial data science. The project aims to transform existing in-well fiber-optic DAS cables into dense seismic sensing arrays and combine them with offshore seismological stations to improve event detection, localization, and characterization in challenging offshore environments.
You will work in an interdisciplinary setting with collaborators from KNMI, EBN, and a Horizon Europe CETP consortium led by NORSAR. The research includes advanced signal processing, machine learning, and physics-based simulations, with opportunities to publish, present at conferences, develop open-source algorithms, and collaborate with academic, governmental, and industry partners.
Eligibility highlights: a soon-to-be-obtained PhD in seismology, DAS, deep learning related to Earth sciences, or a related field; strong English; experience handling seismological time-series data; programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C and/or Fortran; familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX; inverse theory is desirable but not required.
Funding and terms: full-time position for 1 year with a possible 1-year extension depending on available funds. Salary is €4,251–€5,760 gross per month, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, and 41 vacation days per year.
Deadline: 21 November 2026. Preferred start date is between 1 January 2027 and 1 May 2027.
How to apply: Submit your application online via the vacancy page. Include a motivation letter, CV, two references, publications/projects/work experience, and your academic transcript(s) plus PhD thesis or an English summary if the thesis is not in English.
