About this position
McGill University’s Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC), Department of History & Classical Studies, is recruiting two postdoctoral researchers to join a project on the history of the Indian Ocean World from c.1800 to the present. The positions examine the impacts of either sulphur-rich volcanic eruptions or cyclones on societies and environments across a macro-region stretching from East Asia to Eastern Africa.
The project is especially interested in candidates whose research engages with the experiences of peoples and communities indigenous to the Indian Ocean World, including perspectives on gender, age, ethnic disparity, and wealth disparity. Possible themes include agricultural production, trade, health, disease and medicine, demography, migration, religious beliefs, revolt, and political change.
This is a full-time postdoctoral opening at McGill University in Canada, based at Peterson Hall. The post is unionized, with a planned start date in March 2027. The annual salary is listed as $55,000 (also shown as $55,423.08 in the posting) for 35 hours per week.
Eligibility requirements: applicants must have recently been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the past 5 years in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies (STS), Health Humanities, or a closely related discipline. The PhD must be completed before the appointment start date. Applicants should have a strong publication and research record, experience with independent qualitative/ethnographic/historical/interpretive or mixed-methods research, and strong communication skills.
To apply, submit a cover letter describing your current research, future plans, and interest in the post, a CV, one sample of scholarly writing, and the names of three referees. If you have not yet completed the PhD, include a letter from the Department Chair specifying the dissertation defence date. Applications are due 2026-11-27.
