About this position

The National Laboratory of the Rockies is seeking a full-time, fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher in Golden, Colorado, within the Energy Systems Control and Optimization group of the Power Systems Engineering Center.

The research focuses on inverter-based-resource (IBR)-dominated power grids, including power system protection, transient and small-signal stability, protective-relay modeling, fault studies, and control strategies for low-inertia systems with low short-circuit ratios. The researcher will develop relay models from vendor documentation, evaluate existing protection schemes, conduct fault and stability studies, validate results using commercial relays and hardware-in-the-loop testing, and build electromagnetic-transient models in PSCAD. The role also includes automating simulation scenarios, extracting study features with Python, and contributing to journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports.

Applicants must have received a PhD within the last three years and demonstrate expertise in power system protection, protection relays, power electronics, control theory, IBR modeling and stability analysis. Experience with relay configuration, relay-hardware-in-the-loop testing, CAPE, ASPEN, PSCAD, PSS/E, PSLF, MATLAB/Simulink, RSCAD and Python is expected. Excellent communication, writing, independent-work and troubleshooting skills are required.

The position is based in Golden, Colorado, and offers an annual salary of $76,600–$126,400, plus a comprehensive benefits package. Applications should include a cover letter and resume and must be submitted through the laboratory’s Workday careers portal. DOE access, PIV-card eligibility, background screening, work authorization and a pre-employment drug test are required.
