About this position

The University of Eastern Finland is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Medical Physics and Engineering for the Biophysics Research Group at the Department of Technical Physics on the Kuopio campus. The role is part of a Research Council of Finland consortium project focused on the development of low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) hardware, pulse sequences, image reconstruction, and applications.

The successful candidate will work on the development and validation of methods and hardware for low-field (~50 mT) MRI, contributing to an open-source, open-hardware MRI device. Core duties include designing and constructing the device, implementing and testing software and pulse sequences, collaborating closely with consortium researchers, and engaging with national and international academic and industrial partners. The post also involves writing peer-reviewed publications, helping to acquire and implement third-party funded projects, and taking part in scientific collaboration and teaching-related activities relevant to the candidate’s expertise.

The position is fixed-term for two and a half years starting 1 September 2026 or as agreed. The planned salary at the start of employment is approximately EUR 3,985–4,190 per month, under the salary system for Finnish universities. A trial period applies.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a doctoral degree in physics, engineering, medical engineering, or a related field, with the doctorate completed no more than five years before the position is accepted (career breaks excluded in the calculation). Strong spoken and written English skills are required, along with prior experience in MRI, pulse sequence development, and low-field MRI. Desirable strengths include RF electronics, MRI coil and gradient coil design, programming in MATLAB/C/C++/Python, 3-D printing or other manufacturing methods, image reconstruction techniques such as nonuniform FFT or compressive sensing, a strong publication record, and experience supervising students.

Funding details
