Postdoctoral Researcher in Medical Physics and Engineering (Low-Field MRI)
The University of Eastern Finland invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Medical Physics and Engineering, based in the Biophysics Research Group at the Department of Technical Physics, Kuopio campus. This full-time, fixed-term position (2.5 years) is part of a Research Council of Finland consortium project focused on the development of low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) hardware, pulse sequences, image reconstruction, and applications. The successful candidate will join the Quantitative MRI research group, contributing to the advancement and validation of image reconstruction methods and hardware for low-field (~50 mT) MRI.
Main responsibilities include developing and constructing an open-source, open-hardware low-field MRI device, implementing and testing software (especially pulse sequences), collaborating with national and international research partners, and writing scientific publications. The role also involves mentoring and supervising PhD, Bachelor’s, and Master’s students, as well as participating in teaching activities relevant to the candidate’s expertise. The position offers opportunities for professional development, scientific collaboration, and involvement in third-party funded projects.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in physics, engineering, medical engineering, or a related field, completed within the last five years (excluding parental leave, military service, etc.). Essential qualifications include strong English language skills and prior experience in magnetic resonance imaging, pulse sequence development, and low-field MRI. Additional assets are skills in electronics (RF electronics, MRI coil design, gradient coil design), programming (MATLAB, C/C++, Python), manufacturing methods (such as 3D printing), experience in MRI image reconstruction (nonuniform FFT, compressive sensing), a strong publication record, and experience supervising students. Official English translations are required for degree documents not in English, Finnish, or Swedish.
The salary is determined according to the Finnish university salary system, with a starting total of approximately EUR 3,825–4,020 per month, and includes comprehensive staff benefits such as occupational health care, staff training, and sports services. The University of Eastern Finland is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equality, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
To apply, submit your application via the electronic application form by 18 December 2025, 23:59 Finnish time. Required documents include a CV, list of publications, degree and language certificates, a motivation letter (max 2 pages), and up to three additional supporting documents.
