About this position
The AFIM team (Food, Fermentation, Interactions, and Microbiota) within the Joint Research Unit for Food and Microbiological Processes (UMR PAM) at Université Bourgogne Europe is offering a postdoctoral position in microbiology based in Dijon, France.
This postdoc is centered on the microbial antagonistic activity of the yeast Metschnikowia pulcherrima against food spoilage microorganisms. The project combines food microbiology, yeast biology, protein purification, microfluidics, and real-time imaging to understand how inhibitory activity is mediated at both the molecular and single-cell levels.
The research is organized into three complementary work packages: (1) evaluating pulcherriminic acid production and antifungal activity across a collection of M. pulcherrima strains; (2) purifying and characterizing bioactive molecules, including potential killer toxins, from culture supernatants; and (3) using microfluidic devices and fluorescence microscopy to study direct and diffusible-molecule-mediated microbial interactions. The work aims to identify strains and compounds responsible for growth inhibition and to distinguish contact-dependent effects from secreted inhibitory factors.
The successful candidate will work closely with the project principal investigator and the AFIM team, and will interact with technical and analytical platforms in microbiology, protein purification, microfluidics, and cellular imaging. The project offers an interdisciplinary research environment with opportunities to contribute to team meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences.
Eligibility and profile: applicants must hold a PhD in microbiology, biotechnology, or microbial biology obtained less than 3 years ago. Strong practical skills in yeast cultivation, quantitative microbiology, molecular biology, experimental design, and data analysis are required. Experience in genomics, omics, or metabolite analysis is a plus. Knowledge of wine microbiology and microbial interactions is appreciated. French at B2 level minimum is needed for daily laboratory interactions; English at basic level is also required.
Contract and funding: this is a full-time 12-month fixed-term postdoctoral contract. Remuneration is between €2,417 and €2,550 gross per month. The position starts on 23/11/2026.
Location: IUVV, PAM Laboratory — University of Burgundy Europe, Dijon (21000), France.
Application deadline: 29/11/2026.
To apply, candidates should submit a complete CV and a motivation/application letter via the recruitment website.
