About

Fredrik Bäckhed is a Professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. His research focuses primarily on the interplay between gut microbiota and various health conditions, including metabolic diseases and neurological disorders. Recent articles explore topics such as the gut microbial production of compounds affecting Parkinson's pathology, the influence of GLP-1R signaling on colonic energy metabolism, and the potential for tailoring the gut microbiome to prevent cardiometabolic diseases.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbiology and Gut Microbiota at the University of Gothenburg

Postdoctoral position in Microbiology at the University of Gothenburg , Sweden, in the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine / Institute of Medicine. The project focuses on the gut microbiota , especially Faecalibacterium and related members of Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae , with an emphasis on diet-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions, microbial metabolism, and links to metabolic diseases . The work combines anaerobic cultivation , isolation of human gut bacteria, comparative genomics, phylogenetic analysis, functional genome annotation, metabolomics, and experimental model systems. The successful candidate will analyze bacterial species, strains, and genomes, and investigate how strain-level variation shapes microbial function and host metabolism. Eligibility: a doctoral degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent foreign degree) is required before the employment decision is made. Recent PhD graduates are preferred, and applicants with strong experience in anaerobic microbiology, genome-based bacterial characterization, and R-based data analysis are especially encouraged. Required experience: YCFA medium and other anaerobic culture media, Coy chambers or equivalent anaerobic systems, genome-based phylogenetic identification, ANI, dDDH, Prokka, COGs/EggNOG, programming/statistical analysis in R, and excellent English. Merits: experience with Lachnospiraceae/Oscillospiraceae, butyrate-producing or fibre-degrading bacteria, faecal cultures from human samples, dietary substrate metabolism, phenotypic characterization methods, Faecalibacterium, and international research experience. Employment: fixed-term postdoc for 36 months, 100% employment. Start date: 2026-11-01 or by agreement. Salary is individually set. Application deadline: 2026-09-07. Apply via the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal and attach a PhD certificate (or provide it later if not yet issued) plus a cover letter describing relevant experience.
