About this position

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for a two-year appointment in the Zhivonitko Research Group, NMR Research Unit, Faculty of Science. The NMR Research Unit is a vibrant, multidisciplinary team of physicists and chemists engaged in experimental, theoretical, and computational research on magnetic resonance and molecular magnetism. The group’s research covers a broad spectrum at the intersection of chemistry and physics, with a strong focus on innovation and global collaboration. English is the working language, and the unit is highly international, with about half of its members coming from outside Finland.

This postdoctoral position is part of the Research Council of Finland project “Enhancing NMR Sensitivity Through Metal-Free Catalysis,” led by Professor Vladimir Zhivonitko. The research involves experimental NMR spectroscopy, nuclear spin hyperpolarization using parahydrogen, molecular modelling, and the development and application of metal-free catalysts. The successful candidate will contribute to studying, designing, and applying new types of catalysts for parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) and signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE). The exact research focus will be tailored to the candidate’s background and interests, with opportunities to work across chemistry, spectroscopy, and physics.

The position is full-time and fixed-term for two years, with a starting gross salary of approximately 3800–4300 € per month (before taxes), based on Finnish university salary levels and personal performance. Applicants must have a completed doctoral degree in chemistry, catalysis, materials science, physics, or a related field, obtained within the last 7–10 years. A visible scientific profile, potential for acquiring extramural funding, and teaching experience are considered merits. Additional qualifications include scientific publications, thesis supervision, activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity with the field, international experience, and knowledge in NMR spectroscopy, organic and organometallic chemistry, catalysis, or computational chemistry. Fluency in English, motivation, strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently, are essential. Experience in NMR experiments and theory, synthetic chemistry, quantum-chemical software, and interdisciplinary work is beneficial but not mandatory.
