About this position
The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in Barcelona is recruiting a Junior Post-doctoral Researcher for the Pluripotency for Organ Regeneration Research Group. The project focuses on developing advanced human organoid platforms based on human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC) for disease modelling and drug screening applications.
The successful candidate will work at the interface of bioengineering, stem cell biology, and translational biomedical research. Main research activities include designing controlled cell-to-cell and cell-to-ECM microenvironments to improve organoid differentiation and reproducibility; synthesizing biomimetic hydrogels; developing organ-on-chip approaches; and using 3D bioprinting. The role also involves scalable differentiation of human organoids from hPSCs in 2D and 3D culture, implementing quantitative and qualitative assays to track molecular, metabolic, and functional changes, and defining standard operating procedures (SOPs).
In addition to hands-on research, the postdoc will contribute to data analysis, scientific publications, and conference presentations. The position includes mentorship responsibilities, with supervision of PhD and Master’s students, and participation in project management and reporting under the PI’s guidance.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biomedicine, or a related area, and must be within 3 years of PhD thesis defense. Strong experience in hPSC culture and differentiation, confocal microscopy, quantitative image analysis, molecular biology, and bioengineering methods such as microfabrication, biomaterials, organ-on-chip, or bioprinting is required. A high level of English is expected. Additional assets include CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, RNA-seq analysis, live imaging, and custom script development for image processing.
Location and institution: IBEC is an interdisciplinary research centre focused on bioengineering and nanomedicine, based in Barcelona, Spain. The institute provides an international, interdisciplinary research environment, training opportunities, and support for relocation and visa/work-permit procedures for foreign applicants.
Contract and timing: this is a full-time, temporary postdoctoral position with an open-ended contract linked to technical and scientific project activities and available budget duration. The anticipated starting date is January 2027. One position is available.
Application deadline: 30 November 2026, 23:59 Europe/Madrid. Applications must be submitted online through the IBEC careers portal. Reference: PD-EG. Contact: [email protected].

What's required
PhD in biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biomedicine or a similar area is required. Candidates must be within 3 years of PhD thesis defense. Essential experience includes culture and differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC), ideally hPSC-derived organoids, confocal microscopy, quantitative image analysis, and molecular biology techniques. Proven experience with bioengineering technologies such as microfabrication, biomaterials, organ-on-chip, or bioprinting is required. Applicants should be able to work independently, manage complex projects under tight deadlines, mentor junior researchers, and demonstrate excellent scientific writing, presentation, teamwork, proactivity, and critical/analytical thinking. High-level English is required. Advantageous experience includes quantitative imaging in 2D/3D organoid settings, live imaging, custom scripts for image processing and quantification, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, and RNA sequencing analysis (bulk and single-cell).
