About this position

IE University’s School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs (SPEGA) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Political Economy (Mixed Methods) for the ERC-funded project (DIS)EMPOWER, led by Professor Michael Becher. The project studies how automation, AI, and robots affect worker power in the workplace and in democratic politics, with a focus on mobilization, bargaining, and political competition during technological change.

The position is based at IE University in Madrid, Spain, within the Political Science and International Relations group. It is a four-year postdoctoral appointment with an option to extend by one year, and it is described as 100% research-focused. The role includes a competitive remuneration package and support for conference travel.

Research activities include contributing to scientific articles, designing and conducting original data collection, and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data. The project combines surveys, administrative data, fieldwork, and elite interviews, and the successful candidate may also develop independent research aligned with their own agenda.

Applicants should have a PhD in political science, political economy, industrial relations, or a related field, or clear evidence that the PhD will be completed by the start date (no later than September 2027). Strong methodological skills are essential, especially experience with observational data, mixed methods, and qualitative research such as interviews. English fluency is required, and additional fluency in French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, or Swedish is an asset.

To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, job market paper, and three confidential letters of recommendation. The application deadline is October 30, 2026.
