About this position
The University of Groningen is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Supply Chain Resilience for a one-year position focused on quantitative research at the intersection of critical materials, clean energy technologies, sustainability, and global supply chains.
This project investigates how disruptions propagate through supply chains across material extraction, processing, manufacturing, use, and recycling. The research will examine vulnerabilities arising from international trade dependencies, concentrated production, and shocks such as trade restrictions, production interruptions, and demand changes. It will also assess how supply chains can recover from disruption and adapt to geopolitical, economic, and environmental change.
The successful candidate will work with Dr Xin Sun to develop a research focus aligned with both the project objectives and the researcher’s expertise. Possible topics include mapping dependencies and bottlenecks in critical material and clean energy supply chains; modelling disruption impacts; and evaluating resilience strategies such as supplier diversification, recycling, material substitution, and technological innovation.
Methods may include network analysis, material flow analysis, input-output modelling, optimization, and scenario-based simulation. The role includes building and applying quantitative models, compiling and assessing data on material flows, trade, production capacities, and technologies, comparing resilience strategies, preparing journal articles, presenting at scientific meetings, collaborating with colleagues, and maintaining transparent and reproducible datasets and workflows.
This is a strong opportunity for a researcher interested in the resilience of strategic and critical supply chains, especially in the context of the low-carbon transition and resource sustainability. The position is based at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and closes on 2026-11-11.
Applications should be submitted through the AcademicTransfer portal using the provided application link.
