About this position

RIKEN’s Neural Circuits and Computations Unit at the RIKEN Center for Brain Science is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist for a project at the intersection of computational neuroscience, NeuroAI, machine learning, neural network modeling, and neural data analysis.

The successful candidate will investigate the computational principles of dreaming using biological neural network models, machine learning, and neural data. The work is part of a broader JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Transformative Research Areas (A) project on Scientific Dream Interpretation, involving multiple principal investigators across Japan and collaborations with experimentalists working across animal species.

Research directions may include: explaining how dreams are produced by brain circuits using neural network models; studying the role of dream computations in biological systems and comparing them with artificial systems; and using dreaming as inspiration to improve machine learning models.

Eligibility: a doctoral degree in computer science, physics, engineering, mathematics, statistics, neuroscience, psychology, or a related field; strong quantitative skills; experience with neural networks for neural circuit modeling and/or machine learning; fluency with mathematical expressions; familiarity with neural data is preferred.

Location: RIKEN Wako Campus, Saitama, Japan. The position is on-site in principle.

Funding: contract-based position with annual salary starting at 5 million yen, plus allowances and social insurance.

Deadline: applications are accepted from 2026-10-15 until 2027-10-15, and the position remains open until filled.
