About this position

RIKEN’s Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) in Kobe, Japan is recruiting for a Senior Research Scientist, Research Scientist, or Postdoctoral Researcher under the new BDR–RISE Program. This call is designed for early-career and independent-minded researchers who want to build a collaborative project across two or more BDR laboratories and develop a broader research profile through cross-disciplinary work.

The research areas include developmental biology, molecular biology, system genome science, biophysics, and neuroscience. Participating labs span topics such as developmental dynamics, cell polarity, brain organoids, AI biology, nutritional biology, neural stem cells, chromosome segregation, heart regeneration, genetic engineering, quantitative biology of cell fate, developmental genome systems, physical biology, gametogenesis, tissue microenvironment, developmental epigenetics, comparative connectomics, lung development and regeneration, and more.

The successful candidate will propose a collaborative project at application time and, if selected, will hold a joint appointment across the relevant laboratories. The program provides research funding of 3,000,000 JPY per year per project, allocated to the host and partner labs. Salary is annualized and based on experience, ability, and performance, with additional allowances such as commuting and housing support, plus social insurance.

Eligibility depends on the role: Senior Research Scientist requires a PhD plus more than 5 years of post-PhD experience; Research Scientist requires a PhD; Postdoctoral Researcher requires a doctorate earned within the past 5 years or expected before the start date. Applicants should be strongly motivated to lead collaborative research and work cooperatively across laboratories. The expected start date is April 1, 2027 or October 1, 2027, depending on selection and coordination.

Before applying, candidates must contact the heads/PIs of the prospective host and partner laboratories to confirm participation and discuss the project. Applications are submitted online via the RIKEN job posting page. The deadline is 2026-11-30.
