Funded PhD opportunity in viral DNA mimic proteins at the University of Bristol. Professor Mark Dillingham is seeking an enthusiastic PhD student to investigate how bacterial viruses (phages) produce proteins that masquerade as DNA and sabotage molecular machinery in bacterial hosts. The project will focus on discovering new DNA mimic proteins and understanding their mechanisms, including viral targeting of the bacterial DNA-processing enzyme RecBCD. Research will combine computational structura...

About this position

The Goulding Lab at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to study the molecular mechanisms of bacterial competition using cryo-electron microscopy. Working in collaboration with the Hayes Lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the project focuses on the structures and assembly of effector, immunity, and delivery complexes used by bacteria to attack neighboring cells, defend against attack, and invade host cells.

The postdoctoral researcher will use single-particle cryo-EM to determine high-resolution structures of these complexes and connect those structures to mechanism. The work sits at the interface of structural biology, microbiology, and biochemistry, with an emphasis on translating structural information into mechanistic understanding of how these systems assemble, are recognized and transported, and how immunity neutralizes them.

Day-to-day research will include preparing, screening, and optimizing cryo-EM grids; collecting and processing high-resolution single-particle datasets; building and refining atomic models; and validating structural findings with biochemical and genetic approaches. The role also includes recombinant protein expression and purification, including challenging membrane-associated assemblies, and close collaboration with both labs through exchange of materials and shared project work.

The position is embedded in an active research environment and includes opportunities to present results at lab meetings, conferences, and in peer-reviewed publications, while also helping mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Funding details

Salary range $71,491-$85,736; salary follows the UC postdoctoral salary scale and includes full UC benefits.

What's required

Ph.D. in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field, or be in the final stages of completing one. Applicants should have demonstrated hands-on experience with cryo-EM from sample preparation through data collection, processing, and model building; proficiency with standard processing software such as RELION and cryoSPARC and model-building tools such as Coot and Phenix; experience with recombinant protein expression and purification; a strong publication record or manuscripts in preparation appropriate to career stage; and excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
