About this position
The University of California, Los Angeles is establishing a Fusion Simulation Center focused on developing concepts for a compact fusion power plant. The advertised postdoctoral scholar will work within the Department of Physics & Astronomy on fusion simulation in a broad research environment that connects discovery plasma science, fusion science, and engineering.
The role centers on using simulation suites to explore optimized configurations for fusion power plants and other fusion testbed devices. The scholar will also develop software modules for specific components of the challenge and investigate topics that may range from fundamental plasma science questions to technology-oriented issues such as blanket design or materials behavior, depending on the successful candidate’s expertise.
The position is embedded in an interdisciplinary effort spanning energy extraction, blanket design, tritium breeding, materials development, and efficient plasma confinement. The scholar is expected to support other users in the center, including students and student projects, produce journal papers and conference talks, collaborate within UCLA and with external partners, and potentially contribute to validation activities on tokamaks or other testbed devices.
The advertised research environment emphasizes autonomy, technical depth, and the ability to reduce highly complex issues to practical understanding. It is a postdoctoral research opportunity in fusion simulation within UCLA’s Physics & Astronomy department and the emerging Fusion Simulation Center.
