About this position
Stanford University’s Pediatric Exocrine Pancreas Program is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to investigate the mechanisms of pancreatitis and the pain associated with this inflammatory disease. The project is based in Dr. Sohail Husain’s laboratory and uses zebrafish as a whole-organism new approach methodology to support discovery of targeted therapies.
The researcher will develop hypothesis-driven studies in adult and larval zebrafish models of pancreatitis. Research directions include identifying neurons and neural circuits that drive pancreatitis pain, generating transgenic lines to track and manipulate acinar cells, immune cells, and sensory neurons, imaging pancreatic injury and recovery in transparent larvae, and screening compounds for candidate therapies.
The laboratory combines zebrafish husbandry and disease modeling with transgenesis, microinjection, stable-line establishment, confocal and light-sheet microscopy, live imaging, chemogenetics, optogenetics, neural activity and behavioral assays, high-throughput chemical screening, serum enzyme and cytokine assays, histology, and transcriptional profiling. Projects may also involve validation in mouse models and human samples.
The postdoctoral scholar will work across pain neuroscience, imaging, inflammation biology, and translational research, while benefiting from Stanford’s zebrafish and animal facilities, imaging and microscopy cores, genomics resources, and biostatistical support. Responsibilities include designing experiments, leading technical studies, collaborating across disciplines, publishing findings, presenting at scientific meetings, and developing future independent research directions.

What's required
Applicants must have completed a PhD or MD before appointment and have extensive hands-on zebrafish experience, including husbandry, breeding, and handling of larvae and adults. Required expertise includes zebrafish transgenesis, generation and maintenance of stable transgenic lines, and fluorescence, confocal, or light-sheet microscopy of zebrafish. Applicants should show scientific productivity and strong potential for independent research. Preferred experience includes chemogenetics, optogenetics, calcium imaging, neural circuit mapping, high-throughput chemical screening, and interests in translational research, pain, or inflammation biology. Application materials include a CV, cover letter describing research interests and alignment, a research statement outlining past and future research goals, and contact information for three references.
How to apply
Submit a CV, cover letter, research statement, and contact information for three references. Address the materials to Dr. Sohail Husain and email them to Dr. Olivia Tsai at [email protected].
