About this position
Baylor College of Medicine is recruiting a Research Associate in Electrophysiology for the St-Pierre Lab in the Neuroscience Division in Houston, Texas, United States. This onsite research position focuses on developing and applying tools for monitoring and manipulating brain activity with millisecond-scale temporal resolution.
The successful researcher will characterize light-responsive proteins, including genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs), which report voltage changes through fluorescence, and optogenetic silencers that inhibit neuronal firing. Experiments combine electrophysiological recordings with optogenetic stimulation and optical imaging, including multiphoton fluorescence microscopy and two-photon voltage imaging.
Responsibilities include culturing mammalian cells; preparing brain slices and dissociated neurons; performing electrophysiology; maintaining experimental reagents and electrophysiology rigs; analyzing data with commercial software and customized pipelines; documenting and presenting results; teaching laboratory techniques; and planning and conducting research experiments. The role may also involve supervising or coordinating less experienced research staff.
Applicants must hold a master's degree in basic science or a related field and have approximately three years of relevant research experience. Required technical experience includes electrophysiology in dissociated neurons and/or brain slices, dissection of rat cortical or hippocampal neurons, and maintenance of an electrophysiology rig. A doctoral degree, viral or in utero transgene expression, and one-photon or two-photon imaging of neural activity are preferred. The position offers a salary of $65,000–$70,000 and does not provide visa sponsorship.

What's required
A master's degree in basic science or a related field is required; experience cannot substitute for the degree. Candidates typically need three years of relevant experience as a research assistant, research technician, or postdoctoral fellow/associate. Required experience includes electrophysiology in dissociated neurons and/or brain slices, dissection of rat cortical and/or hippocampal neurons, and maintenance of an electrophysiology rig. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree, experience expressing transgenes in neurons of brain slices using viruses and/or in utero electroporation, and experience imaging neural activity such as voltage or calcium signals in brain slices or in vivo using one-photon and/or two-photon imaging. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States; the position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
