About this position
Dr. Sal Baker’s laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar to join a multidisciplinary team studying the cellular and molecular control of gastrointestinal motility.
The project centers on the gastrointestinal pacemaker system, with a strong focus on interstitial cells of Cajal, calcium signaling, and the mechanisms through which enteric neurons and gastrointestinal hormones regulate pacemaker activity, mechanotransduction, and smooth muscle function.
The research environment combines physiology, neuroscience, imaging, and molecular approaches, and the lab uses advanced tools such as optical imaging, genetically encoded calcium indicators, electrophysiology, molecular biology, optogenetics/chemogenetics, and transgenic mouse models.
The successful postdoctoral researcher will have the chance to lead independent projects while working closely with physiologists, neuroscientists, and imaging specialists on questions relevant to normal gut motility and gastrointestinal disorders.
The broader department also studies smooth muscle physiology and motor neurotransmission, including gastrointestinal and bladder muscle function, calcium signaling, ion channels, neuroeffector pathways, and cell-to-cell communication.
Research in this group connects fundamental cell biology with physiological mechanisms and disease-relevant models in the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine research setting.
