About this position
A postdoctoral scholar research associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Annie Hiniker at the University of Southern California. The project is NIH-funded and carried out in close collaboration with Dr. Allison Kraus at Case Western Reserve University.
The research asks when and where tau seeding first emerges in the normal human brain and how tau seeds are altered by age, co-pathologies, inflammatory responses, and regional molecular changes. The work centers on human neuropathology and aims to define the distribution, biochemical features, and cellular correlates of pathogenic tau seeds across aging and disease states.
The position combines several complementary approaches, including studies of well-characterized human brain tissue from control and neurodegenerative disease cohorts, neuropathologic analysis by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, biochemical characterization, and transcriptomic and multiomic profiling. The project also integrates neuropathology with RT-QuIC and related seed amplification assays performed in the Kraus laboratory, linking human tissue findings to seeding activity and molecular state.
The Hiniker lab works broadly on human neuropathology, cell and molecular biology, and molecular profiling to identify mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disease, with a particular focus on protein aggregation and degradation. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to manuscript preparation, figures, abstracts, and presentations while working in a collaborative research environment spanning USC and Case Western Reserve University.
