About this position
The University of California, Irvine is seeking a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Earth System Science to work with Professor Henri Drake on a project focused on synchronous ice sheet–Earth system modeling. The research is centered on understanding how grounded ice sheets, floating ice shelves, icebergs, and sea ice interact with the ocean and influence global climate dynamics.
The selected scholar will work with computational models to investigate two-way feedbacks in the cryosphere–ocean system using novel configurations of the Community Earth System Model (CESM3) coupled synchronously to the Community Ice Sheet Model (CISM3). The project includes fully coupled experiments with dynamic Greenlandic and Antarctic ice sheet representations, the evaluation of newly implemented basal melt and calving parameterizations, and the development of process-based diagnostics to assess simulation fidelity against remote sensing and in-situ observations.
The position also involves running mechanism-denial experiments to isolate the role of coupled feedbacks and contributing to a collaborative research effort within the Ocean and Climate Dynamics group. The group combines theory and numerical simulation to study multi-scale ocean processes and their role in Earth system dynamics, with collaborations spanning NSF NCAR model developers and observational researchers at UC Irvine and nearby institutions.
This is a research-intensive postdoctoral opportunity in a highly interdisciplinary Earth System Science department, offering the chance to contribute to cutting-edge coupled climate-cryosphere modeling while working in a collaborative environment with strong connections to model development and observational science.
