About this position
The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is offering a full-time postdoctoral scholarship in the field of redox flow batteries within the ELCAT research group, Faculty of Applied Engineering. This position is part of the prestigious European Research Council-funded RECHARGE project, led by Professor Jonas Hereijgers, which aims to develop the next generation of redox flow batteries for sustainable energy storage and green industry applications.
ELCAT is a vibrant research group with over 50 researchers, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and a strong focus on electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering. The group’s scientific activities center on the development of advanced electrochemical reactors and batteries, contributing to a sustainable society and industry.
As a postdoctoral scholar, you will conduct high-quality research on redox flow batteries, specifically focusing on the development and testing of 3D electrodes and the study of hydrodynamics and dynamic flow regimes. You will be responsible for designing experiments, analyzing results, and publishing academic papers. The role also includes supervising PhD students, maintaining the battery laboratory, and supporting ongoing research projects within the group. You will have opportunities to develop new research initiatives and compete for external funding at both national and international levels.
The position requires a PhD in Engineering, (Electro)Chemical Engineering, Applied Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Candidates should have substantial international experience in redox flow batteries and expertise in electrochemical engineering, with a strong background in experimental research. Fluency in English (preferably at C1 level) is essential, and experience in project proposal writing and supervising graduate students is highly valued. Recommendation letters are strongly encouraged as part of the application.
The appointment is for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal following a positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to the university’s pay scales for contract research staff (Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP). The successful candidate will work primarily at Campus Drie Eiken, benefiting from a dynamic and supportive environment. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all applicants.
Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by January 5, 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, and any reference letters. For questions regarding the application process, contact [email protected]. For inquiries about the position, reach out to Professor Jonas Hereijgers at [email protected].
This is an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers with expertise in redox flow batteries and electrochemical engineering to join a leading research group and contribute to cutting-edge advancements in sustainable energy storage.
