About this position
Empa is recruiting a PostDoc/Scientist to work on blue-green pavement systems within its Concrete & Asphalt Laboratory in Dübendorf, Switzerland. The research focuses on sustainable asphalt pavements and multifunctional infrastructure for cities.
The project will address permeable and water-filtering pavement structures, urban heat island mitigation, semi-bound pavement materials, carbon-sink applications, and the interaction of mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal performance. Duties include developing and characterizing innovative pavement materials, performing mechanistic structural design and modelling, conducting laboratory and field testing, and using and instrumenting a full-scale pavement facility.
The successful researcher will also manage projects, collaborate with research partners and stakeholders, report to funding agencies, contribute to international forums, and help develop new research grants. A PhD in Pavement Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline is required, with experience in asphalt, granular materials, permeable pavements, and multiscale material characterization. Excellent English communication and scientific writing skills are essential; German is advantageous.
The position is funded for two years, starting in February 2027 or by mutual agreement. Empa offers competitive employment conditions, advanced research infrastructure, an interdisciplinary international environment, and a strong commitment to inclusion and sustainability.
Applications must be submitted exclusively through the online job portal and should include a motivation letter, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details for two referees.
