PhD opportunity: Golgi function in brain organoids at the Medical Research Council (Cambridge), Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK. This project investigates how the Golgi apparatus organizes membrane trafficking and how Golgi proteins contribute to tissue function and neurodevelopment. The research uses brain organoids derived from stem cells to model tissue formation in vitro, with a focus on the YIPF5 protein complex and related proteins implicated in microcephaly, epilepsy, and diabetes (ME...

About this position

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB), part of UK Research and Innovation, is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Scientist to work in Dr Greg Jefferis’s group in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

The project focuses on molecular connectomics in Drosophila. The successful researcher will develop methods to map neuronal gene and protein expression onto reference electron-microscopy connectomes and apply these approaches to investigate the development and organisation of sexually dimorphic neural circuits.

Research activities include neural development, microscopy, image analysis, software development, machine learning for neural data analysis, and the study of olfactory and descending-to-motor circuit architecture. The role involves designing and conducting experiments, developing novel techniques, presenting findings, contributing to publications, collaborating across the LMB, and helping train PhD students and other laboratory members.

This is a three-year training and development postdoctoral position intended for a recently graduated doctoral researcher, someone moving into a new research discipline, or a candidate with limited experience in key transferable skills. Applicants need a PhD in a relevant subject, preferably neurobiology, or expected completion within six months, along with a research publication record and evidence of originality, communication, commitment, and teamwork.

The salary is £42,694 per annum. The appointment is full-time and fixed-term for three years, with UKRI/MRC benefits and structured professional-development support. Applications should include a CV and covering letter addressing the selection criteria and motivation for the role. The closing date is 19 November 2026.
