About this position
CNS at Middlebury College is offering a postdoctoral or predoctoral fellowship in emerging technologies and nuclear/biological security, with a strong interest in candidates working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and security policy.
The fellowship is based on-site in Monterey, California, United States, at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS). The fellow will spend a year in residence conducting research, publishing scholarly and policy-oriented work, presenting at conferences, mentoring students and junior staff, and contributing to CNS training activities, including collaboration with the in-house AI Innovation Lab and the Asilomar Process for AI & Global Security.
This is an interdisciplinary opportunity open to applicants from public policy, international relations, social sciences, computer science, engineering, and the natural sciences. For the postdoctoral track, a Ph.D. must be completed before arrival. For the predoctoral track, advanced Ph.D. students (ABD) are eligible. Applicants should have research experience in emerging technologies such as AI or quantum computing and international security, with preference for nuclear security experience.
The position is a full-time, benefits-eligible salaried role with a one-year duration and a hiring range of $67,866 to $100,000. Predoctoral candidates are hired at the CNS3A level, while postdoctoral candidates are hired at CNS3B-D depending on experience. Candidates with their own fellowship or sabbatical funding are also encouraged to apply.
Applications are reviewed on a preferred basis before 2027-02-01, and the earliest start date is 2027-07-01. Apply through the Workable portal and specify whether you are applying for the postdoctoral or predoctoral fellowship.
