About this position

RIKEN’s Research Center for Environmental Resource Science is recruiting a Research Fellow or Special Research Fellow in the Plant Genome Expression Research Team for a project on cassava, genome editing, transformation, and plant resource development.

The research is part of the JST Innovative GX Technology Creation Project (GteX), “Construction of an Advanced Plant Bio-Manufacturing Platform.” The team aims to clarify epigenetic, RNA, and peptide regulatory mechanisms involved in environmental stress adaptation and acclimatization, and to develop useful plant resources by improving productivity, biomass quantity/quality, and CO2 absorption and fixation capacity. A major focus is the integrated omics analysis of cassava and the elucidation of sugar metabolism and accumulation mechanisms.

Eligibility: a doctoral degree is required. Research Fellow applicants should have held a PhD for more than 5 years or have equivalent experience. Special Research Fellow applicants should have held a PhD for less than 5 years, or be able to obtain the degree by the start date. Experience or knowledge in molecular biology or plant biotechnology is required, and applicants should be able to work collaboratively and communicate well with internal and external stakeholders.

Funding and conditions: this is a fixed-term contract position with an annual salary starting from 4 million yen. RIKEN provides discretionary work allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance, and social insurance. The planned project end date is March 31, 2028, and the appointment may be renewed up to that date subject to evaluation.

Location: Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, with work at RIKEN’s Yokohama and Wako sites. The post is on-site and not primarily remote.

Deadline: applications are accepted until 2027-01-09, but the position may close earlier once a suitable candidate is found.

How to apply: submit the required documents through the RIKEN recruitment webpage. The posting states that JREC-IN portal web applications and email applications are not accepted.
