About this position
The University of Vienna is offering a predoctoral Scientific Project Assistant position in the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. The successful candidate will join Meike Levin-Keitel’s team and the FWF-funded ADJUST project, “Adaptation for Just and Sustainable Transitions,” within the #connecting minds program.
The doctoral research will examine climate adaptation and just transitions from a spatial planning perspective, at the interface of geography and other geo-sciences. The project combines planning approaches, migration studies, and spatial data science to develop more just climate-adaptation strategies, understand spatial differences, and improve the transfer of heat-adaptation solutions between regions. Comparative research on urban heat stress and climate adaptation is expected, with fieldwork potentially conducted outside Vienna.
Applicants should hold a master's degree with distinction in Spatial Planning or a related discipline and demonstrate strong qualitative and/or quantitative social science research skills. Excellent spoken and written German and English are required. The role also involves participation in studies, publications, presentations, project documentation, and the VISSES Doctoral School, with a dissertation agreement expected within 12–18 months.
The position begins on 1 January 2027, involves 30 hours per week, and is initially limited to one year, with possible extension. The stated salary is EUR 3,714.80 on a full-time basis, subject to adjustment for recognized professional experience. Applications are due by 23 November 2026. Candidates must submit a motivation video, scientific CV, two-page doctoral concept note, degree certificates, and a PDF of their master's or diploma studies through the University of Vienna job portal.
