About this position
This research opportunity at the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland focuses on radio frequency emitter detection and tracking via passive and active techniques. The project sits within the Army Research Laboratory’s Electromagnetic Spectrum Sciences area and is aimed at developing novel approaches for sensing and operating across the electromagnetic environment.
The selected graduate student will work on the design, simulation, and validation of DSP algorithms in Matlab and Python, with an emphasis on RF signal detection, geolocation using multiple data collection nodes, and signal feature extraction. A significant part of the work involves integrating these algorithms into existing RF data capture systems, collecting RF data with preexisting equipment, and post-processing data for algorithm validation and potential real-time implementation.
The project also includes hands-on use of an existing radar and RF sensing platform based on Xilinx RF system-on-a-chip (RFSoC) technology, with web-based and SSH interfaces. The posting highlights the value of prior RFSoC experience, as well as familiarity with RF laboratory instrumentation and experimental data collection.
The work is embedded in ARL’s broader research mission, where scientists and engineers pursue advanced capabilities across digital/optical signal processing, communication and networking, and related technical areas. The research environment combines algorithm development with experimental RF sensing and real-time testing.

What's required
A bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree is listed as eligible, with U.S. citizenship required. The position prefers candidates with past experience in RF signal processing, RF signal identification algorithm development, data collection via software-defined radio technology, and RF system-on-a-chip (RFSoC) technology. Experience with standard RF spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, and other RF benchtop equipment is beneficial. Applicants should be prepared to submit a CV or resume, three references, and transcripts; selected applicants must also prepare a research proposal.
How to apply
Apply through the Zintellect application portal using the provided opportunity link. Submit the required CV or resume, three references, and transcripts, and ensure the reference-form email is sent to your referees. If selected by an advisor, prepare and submit a research proposal for ARL-RAP review.
