About this position
University of Alberta is hiring a Research Associate in Consolidation & Water Treatment in Edmonton, Canada. This is a full-time, in-person, one-year academic research appointment within the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences.
The role is embedded in a research theme focused on developing solutions for environmental challenges and current energy systems, with emphasis on advanced materials, bio-based consolidants, biosorbents, photocatalysts, and water remediation. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Aman Ullah in Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Sciences and collaborate with a broader interdisciplinary team.
Research activities include synthesis and characterization of advanced (bio)-materials from waste and bio-resources, preparation of thin films and sensors, data collection and analysis, calibration/validation/demonstration work, and support for transfer of solutions to industry. The post also involves preparing samples for structural, optical, thermal, and mechanical analyses, carrying out consolidation and bio-sorption experiments, water analysis, assisting with research papers, proposals, presentations, reports, and mentoring or training lab colleagues.
Applicants should have a PhD in Physics or a related discipline, along with a strong publication and/or patent record. Desired experience includes advanced material synthesis, biomaterials, inorganic and semiconductor systems, graphene oxide and graphene quantum dots, photocatalysts, keratin modification, oil sands tailings consolidation, water remediation, and a range of characterization techniques such as SEM, FTIR, TGA, DSC, photoluminescence, ellipsometry, and electrical/optical measurements.
The position offers an annual salary of CAD 65,369 to 81,719 plus a comprehensive benefits package. Priority consideration is given to internal applicants, and Canadian citizens/permanent residents are prioritized if suitable candidates are available.
