Applications are invited for a funded doctoral position at Loughborough University as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Learning Network DIAMOND (Decentralized critical Infrastructure Asset Monitoring and coNDition assessment), a European doctoral programme bringing together 16 PhD students across several countries.

This project focuses on Dual Mode MEMS Sensing for Propulsion Applications, with research centred on designing, fabricating, and validating a novel MEMS sensor for measuring dynamic torque and motion in automotive powertrains. The work combines nonlinear dynamics, sensor modelling, MEMS device development, circuit integration, and laboratory validation on a powertrain rig. A further objective is to package the sensor for autonomous, self-powered sensing, including power management, energy storage, data collection/storage, and wireless transmission, potentially using rotational vibration energy harvesting or another power source.

The position is set within an interdisciplinary environment spanning mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, automotive engineering, and physics. The successful candidate will work with leading academic and industry experts and contribute to research at the interface of micro-sensors, propulsion systems, and condition monitoring.

This is a three-year, fee-free PhD opportunity with funding information listed as £44,296 per annum (Grade 6, subject to annual pay award). Applicants must satisfy MSCA eligibility rules: they must not already hold a PhD and must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to appointment. English proficiency is required to meet both MSCA and Loughborough University standards.
