About this position
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a full-time temporary Research Associate in the Department of Geography to support the Strong Roots, New Growth program.
The project empowers historically underserved landowners and stewards by expanding access to resources, technical assistance, and support networks. Its activities include workshops, hands-on learning, community partnerships, sustainable forestry, agroforestry, land retention, and equitable land access and governance. The program connects land stewardship with environmental sustainability, social justice, community resilience, and intergenerational well-being.
The Research Associate, also described in the position materials as a Forestry Outreach Assistant, will support outreach, community engagement, documentation, and program evaluation. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with project staff and community partners to implement and assess program activities. The position is preferably in person in North Carolina, although hybrid or remote work may be possible depending on project needs.
Preferred preparation includes coursework in forestry, natural resources, geography, environmental studies, environmental or conservation social sciences, or a related field. Experience with community stakeholders, research, education, outreach, digital communications, educational materials, forestry, agroforestry, agriculture, or land-management practices is advantageous. Applicants should be able to work independently, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
