About this position

The Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of Toronto is seeking a Research Associate to join the laboratory of Dr. Gabor G. Kovacs for a 12-month limited-term appointment.

This position is centered on translational research into the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease, with a particular focus on tauopathies and other proteinopathies. The project integrates human postmortem brain tissue, protein biochemistry, cellular disease models, and protein aggregation/seed amplification assays to investigate disease-associated protein aggregation, biochemical heterogeneity, protein homeostasis, and cellular responses.

The Research Associate will take scientific responsibility for defined research projects and is expected to work with substantial independence while remaining in close collaboration with the principal investigator. The role involves designing experiments, developing hypotheses, leading investigations, interpreting complex biochemical and cellular data, refining methodologies, and contributing to new research directions.

Research activities span neuropathology, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and translational neuroscience. The laboratory environment emphasizes original scientific inquiry, rigorous experimental design, and collaboration across disciplines, with responsibilities that also include manuscript preparation, presentations, proposal development, mentoring, and coordination with collaborators.

The successful candidate will contribute to research on disease-relevant proteins such as tau and α-synuclein, using approaches that include biochemical fractionation, Western blotting, cell-based assays, and other complementary methods to explore aggregation, degradation, toxicity, and proteostasis in neurodegeneration.

The appointment is based at the St. George campus in downtown Toronto within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

What's required

PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, molecular genetics, neuroscience or a closely related discipline. Applicants should have demonstrated postdoctoral or equivalent independent research experience relevant to neurodegenerative diseases and protein biochemistry, evidence of scientific independence, a record of peer-reviewed scientific publications, advanced hands-on expertise in protein biochemistry (including SDS-PAGE, Western blotting and biochemical fractionation), and experience with mammalian cell culture or cellular disease models. Strong scientific writing and presentation skills, experience collaborating across disciplines, and the ability to manage multiple research activities independently are required. Experience in tauopathy research, human brain tissue biochemistry, protein degradation pathways, seed amplification assays, neurodegenerative disease modeling, research grant development or international conference presentations is preferred.
