PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in astrophysics and observational astronomy, focused on changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the evolution of supermassive black holes . The project asks why some black holes appear to change dramatically over just months, challenging current ideas about accretion and black-hole growth. The successful candidate will collate a uniform sample of changing-look AGN using major surveys such as SPHEREx, WISE, Euclid, and eROSITA , then measure...

About this position

Two Research Fellow positions are available in the Monash University node of the OzGrav Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery. The appointment is a three-year fixed-term research role based at the Clayton campus, working within a world-leading collaboration focused on gravitational-wave science.

The successful researchers will contribute to projects in broadly defined gravitational-wave astronomy. This may include gravitational-wave data analysis with LIGO and/or pulsar timing arrays, studies of the astrophysics of gravitational-wave sources, and tests of general relativity. The role is positioned at the interface of observational and computational astrophysics, with scope to work on data-rich problems connected to compact objects, cosmology, and fundamental physics.

OzGrav at Monash offers a collaborative research environment within a national Centre of Excellence and a top-ranked university. The opening is designed for researchers who can contribute to high-impact publications and engage with international gravitational-wave research efforts. Enquiries for the role are directed to Professor Eric Thrane.
