About this position
Research Fellow in Developmental Biology and Gene Regulation
The University of Warwick is recruiting a full-time Research Fellow for the Nelson group in the School of Life Sciences, based in Coventry, United Kingdom. The fixed-term appointment runs to 28 February 2030 and is funded by a BBSRC standard research grant.
The project investigates conserved gene-regulatory programmes governing nervous-system and pancreas development across jawed vertebrates. It will examine how highly conserved enhancers regulate critical transcription-factor genes, with implications for understanding vertebrate body-plan conservation and how enhancer mutations may contribute to developmental disorders.
The successful researcher will combine experimental genetics, molecular biology and computational analysis. Work includes human pluripotent-stem-cell-derived organoids, human hindbrain organoid imaging, zebrafish in vivo reporter assays, CRISPR-mediated genome editing, single-cell multiomics, functional genomics and transcriptomics. The role involves collaboration with the Nelson group, Dr Robert Huckstepp’s group and Warwick’s Bioinformatics & Digital Health Research Technology Platform.
Applicants should have a PhD in vertebrate developmental biology, gene regulation or a related field, together with substantial experimental molecular-biology experience. Experience in stem-cell maintenance and differentiation, CRISPR/Cas9, functional genomics, transcriptomics, single-cell multiomics or zebrafish imaging is desirable. Training will be provided in techniques where needed.
The salary is £35,608–£46,049 per year. Applicants near PhD submission or awaiting conferral may initially be appointed as Research Assistants and promoted after the PhD is confirmed. Applications require a CV and cover letter demonstrating suitability against the person specification. The closing date is 8 November 2026 at 11:59pm UK time, although the vacancy may close early.

What's required
Applicants should hold a PhD in vertebrate developmental biology, gene regulation, or a closely related field. Candidates should have substantial practical experience in experimental molecular biology, be able to establish and optimise laboratory techniques, and manage several experimental lines in parallel. Relevant strengths may include mammalian pluripotent stem-cell maintenance and directed differentiation, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, functional genomics and transcriptomics, single-cell multiomics, and zebrafish imaging-based techniques. Full training will be provided where required. Applicants near submission of their PhD or whose degree has not yet been conferred may be appointed initially at Research Assistant level and promoted to Research Fellow after providing evidence of the PhD award. Applications must include a CV and covering letter addressing the essential and desirable criteria.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Warwick vacancy portal by completing the personal details section and uploading a CV and cover letter. Address the essential and desirable criteria and explain your motivation; early applications are encouraged because the vacancy may close early.
