About this position
The University of Birmingham is recruiting three full-time Research Fellows for the AHRC-funded Language Machines: the Arts & Humanities' Contributions to Artificial Intelligence Innovation project. The posts are based in English, Drama and Creative Studies at the University’s Edgbaston campus in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The project investigates the historical and contemporary relationships between the arts and humanities, language, reading, machines, and artificial intelligence. Its historical strand examines the role of the arts and humanities in the development and analysis of AI, including networks of experimenters working with language, meaning, reading, and machines around the emergence of digital computing. Its contemporary strand studies how generative AI transforms linguistic reading practices and explores creative, communicative, and regulatory possibilities for future AI.
Applicants with expertise in humanistic enquiry and interdisciplinary research are encouraged to apply. Relevant interests may include English literature, twentieth-century British literature and culture, book history, archival research, textual analysis, quantitative methods, database development, digital history, and digital humanities.
The role involves developing research objectives, collecting and analysing research data, interpreting findings, contributing to new models and methods, disseminating results through publications and seminars, supporting research administration, and participating in public engagement and related departmental activities.
Candidates should have a relevant PhD or be near completion, together with strong analytical, communication, methodological, organisational, and collaborative skills. The position is full time and fixed term from February 2027 to October 2029, with a salary normally between £36,636 and £46,049 and potential progression to £48,822. The closing date is 22 November 2026.
Applications should be submitted through the University of Birmingham Employee Careers portal. Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Rebecca Roach at [email protected].
