About this position

RIKEN’s Biocomputing Research Team at the Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research is recruiting for contract positions in biocomputing, generative AI, autonomous robot labs, experimental automation, bioinformatics, robotics, and software. The team works across experimental automation, cell modeling, and AI development for scientific discovery, aiming to build an autonomous robot laboratory that integrates experimental robots, AI, simulation, and digital twin technologies.

The opening includes multiple possible job types: Senior Researcher, Researcher, Special Researcher, Research Associate, Senior Engineer, Engineer, and Technical Staff I. The work focuses on model-based active learning architectures, multimodal infrastructure models, large-scale multimodal AI for life science experiments, experimental protocol execution and analysis, integration of heterogeneous robots and equipment, remote operation systems, and simulation platforms for life science research.

This is a fixed-term, non-tenure-track opportunity. Salary is annualized and starts from 3 million yen, with estimated monthly totals depending on role. Benefits include commuting allowance, housing allowance, and social insurance. RIKEN also notes that eligible positions may apply for KAKENHI grants, and telecommuting from within Japan is possible with approval.

Eligibility depends on the role: PhD holders are expected for research-track positions, a master’s degree or equivalent for Research Associate, and relevant technical expertise plus experience for engineering/technical roles. The posting emphasizes collaboration with researchers and engineers inside and outside the lab, and strong communication skills are required.

The work location is Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Applications are accepted from 2026-05-28 to 2027-05-28, though the search may close early once a suitable candidate is found. Apply via the RIKEN recruitment page and submit the required electronic documents, including a resume and list of achievements.
