About this position
RIKEN’s Research Center for Environmental Resource Science is recruiting for the Metabolic Systems Research Team in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. This is a fixed-term Researcher / Postdoctoral Fellow opportunity in plant metabolism, metabolic engineering, and bio-manufacturing, linked to the JST Innovative GX Technology Creation Program (GteX) project Construction of an Advanced Plant Bio-Manufacturing Platform.
The team studies how plant metabolites are biosynthesized, accumulated, and regulated, and how their physiological functions can be understood and leveraged for the production of useful substances in plants. The research combines metabolomics, mathematical modeling, synthetic biology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and plant physiology.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree. The posting distinguishes between Research Fellows (PhD held for more than 5 years or equivalent experience) and Special Research Fellows (PhD held for less than 5 years or degree obtainable by the start date). Strong research experience and knowledge in plant molecular biology, molecular genetics, and biochemistry are required, along with the ability to collaborate effectively.
Funding is employment-based rather than a scholarship: the position is salaried, fixed-term, and includes annual salary, discretionary work allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance, and social insurance. The estimated monthly total at hiring is listed as at least 431,790 yen for researchers or 367,925 yen for special researchers.
The appointment starts on or after April 1, 2026 and runs on a one-year contract that may be renewed until March 31, 2028 depending on performance and project conditions. Applications are accepted from January 8, 2026 through January 8, 2027, and the search may close earlier once a suitable candidate is found.
Apply via the RIKEN careers page and submit the required electronic documents, including a resume and list of achievements. Contact the team by email at [email protected] for inquiries.
