About this position
This opening is for a highly accomplished senior postdoctoral researcher to help lead a causal target validation program at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney. The project sits at the interface of functional genomics, mechanistic biology, and translational therapeutic discovery, using large-scale genomic insights to uncover how genetic variation alters gene regulation, cellular states, and disease biology.
The work builds on the TenK10K initiative, described in the advert as the world’s largest single-cell multi-omics resource, with profiles from 10,000 donors, matched genotypes, and rich clinical phenotyping. The successful candidate will take discoveries from statistical association into experimental validation, designing and running CRISPR perturbations, single-cell functional assays, and high-throughput molecular readouts to identify causal genes, pathways, and regulatory mechanisms.
The role is embedded in the Powell Lab and a broader Garvan research environment that brings together genomics, cellular biology, computational analysis, and clinical collaboration. The lab’s research aims to build a cell-resolved causal map of human biology, integrating large-cohort single-cell genomics, iPSC-based systems, genome engineering, machine learning, and causal inference to understand how DNA variation rewires regulatory networks and contributes to human disease.
The successful researcher will work closely with computational biologists, molecular research assistants, staff scientists, immunologists, and external collaborators, including industry partners and Centre for Population Genomics collaborators. The advert emphasises opportunities to drive first-author publications, contribute to grant and project applications, help build functional capability in the lab, and support a heavily resourced program with state-of-the-art cellular genomics platforms.
The research focus is especially centred on immune biology, but the wider program also spans cardiac disease, neurodegeneration, and cancer, unified by the question of which genes, cell states, and molecular pathways causally drive human traits and disease.

What's required
A PhD in immunology, functional genomics, molecular biology, or a related discipline is required, together with a publication record demonstrating strong experimental and conceptual expertise. Applicants should have deep knowledge of human immune cell biology, hands-on experience with immune functional assays, experience isolating and working with primary human immune cells, and the ability to design mechanistic experiments linking genetic variation to immune regulatory pathways. Familiarity with single-cell genomics, CRISPR genome engineering, or high-throughput molecular profiling is required, along with the ability to collaborate with computational biologists and translate statistical genetics outputs into functional follow-up. Strong analytical, problem-solving, organisational, written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as rigorous experimental discipline, attention to detail, and motivation to learn new technologies. Desirable experience includes disease-relevant immune models, high-parameter or spectral flow cytometry, eQTL/caQTL analysis, phospho-flow or reporter assays, drug target biology, multidisciplinary collaboration, IP generation, supervision of junior researchers, and familiarity with human-sample governance.
