About this position
The University of Eastern Finland invites applications for three full-time Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) positions in the Development of Data Science and AI for Spatial Data at the School of Computing, Kuopio campus, Finland. The positions are part of the ERC-funded MINE-THE-GAP project, which combines satellite imagery, mining reports, and artificial intelligence to map mining activities and their global environmental impacts.
Each doctoral researcher will lead a thesis in one of three areas: semantic segmentation of satellite images for mining land-use mapping; prediction of terrain-height changes from radar and optical time series to estimate mining waste; or multispectral and hyperspectral image classification to identify minerals and commodities at mining sites. The work involves large, multimodal Earth observation datasets, including Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, LiDAR, and hyperspectral data, as well as scalable deep learning, machine learning, and computer vision.
Candidates should hold, or be completing, a Master's degree in a quantitative field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Geoinformatics, Statistics, or a related discipline. Eligibility for postgraduate studies, admission eligibility for the LUMETO Doctoral Programme, strong written and spoken English, good Python or R programming skills, and an interest in machine learning and spatial data are required. Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, Earth observation, geospatial data, cloud computing, or GitHub is advantageous.
The fixed-term appointments last three years from 1 February 2027 or as agreed. The initial salary is approximately EUR 2,710–2,845 per month under the Finnish university salary system, with dedicated support for conferences, workshops, and publications. Applicants must submit an English-language application, CV, publication list, degree and language certificates, transcript, and a one-page motivation letter by 17 November 2026 at 23:59 Finnish time.
