About this position

University College Dublin invites applications for a full-time, three-year postdoctoral research fellowship at the UCD School of English, Drama and Film. The successful researcher will join PanAsia, a European Research Council-funded project on anticolonialism, Pan-Asianism, and periodical culture in Southeast Asia, c. 1850–1920.

The project compares newspapers, journals, and magazines produced across French, British, and Dutch imperial contexts and five interconnected port cities: Singapore, Penang, Rangoon, Batavia, and Saigon. Research themes include Southeast Asian history, literary and media studies, multilingual print culture, anticolonial thought, transimperial and transnational networks, and the circulation of periodical fiction and syndicated articles.

During its first stage, PanAsia will locate and secure permissions for relevant multilingual periodicals, develop a searchable machine-readable database, trace intertextual exchange and reprinted articles, and identify periodical fiction. Applicants may be considered at PD1 or PD2 level. PD1 is aimed at early-stage researchers, while PD2 is intended for researchers who have completed the PD1 stage.
