About this position
ETH Wohnforum – ETH CASE at the Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich, invites applications for two doctoral researcher positions in the SNSF-funded project “From Homes to Habitats – Swiss Housing Cooperatives as Agents of Socio-Ecological Transition.”
The project investigates how housing cooperatives in Switzerland can support more sustainable ways of living. It moves beyond their established role in providing affordable housing to examine innovative social, spatial, and ecological practices across metropolitan, peri-urban, rural, peripheral, and Alpine territories. The research considers how different urbanisation processes shape cooperative housing and its potential for socio-ecological transformation.
Doctoral researchers will contribute to the project’s conceptual and methodological framework, map and develop typologies of housing cooperatives, and conduct qualitative case studies within their territorial focus. Their work will involve site visits, interviews, participant observation, spatial documentation, and qualitative and visual analysis of architectural, spatial, social, and ecological practices. Researchers will also help organise workshops with housing cooperatives and relevant stakeholders.
The positions are based within ETH Wohnforum – ETH CASE, an interdisciplinary institute focused on housing, architecture, and urban development. The doctoral researchers will work with an interdisciplinary team bringing together architecture, housing, urban and territorial studies, and socio-ecological transformation. They will also benefit from association with the Doctoral Programme at the Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies and from collaboration with ETH Wohnforum researchers and international academic and practice-based partners.
The project is under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Elli Mosayebi and includes research coordination with Dr. Metaxia Markaki. It offers a research environment focused on contemporary debates surrounding housing, architecture, urbanisation, and socio-ecological transition.
