PhD positions are open at the University of Alberta in data-driven laser additive manufacturing for small modular reactors (SMRs). Dr. Mostafa Yakout, Assistant Professor and Engineering Research Chair in Additive Manufacturing in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is recruiting two PhD students to work on data-driven laser additive manufacturing of 316L and 316H stainless steel for nuclear applications.
The project is interdisciplinary and sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, materials science, nuclear materials, and computational modeling. Research will be carried out in the Alberta Next-Generation Additive Manufacturing (ANGAM) Lab at the University of Alberta, with collaboration from the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, the University of Regina, and the University of New Brunswick. The work is funded by NSERC and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission through the NSERC-CNSC SMRs Research Grant Initiative (Phase II).
Successful candidates will gain training in metal additive manufacturing, in-situ monitoring, advanced materials characterization, and mechanical testing for nuclear applications. The post highlights experience with PBF-LB and/or DED-LB, SEM, EBSD, XRD, FEA, and/or molecular dynamics as strong assets. Applicants should have an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field. English proficiency proof is requested if applicable.
The positions are expected to start in Fall 2026, and the post says applications remain open through June 2026. Priority may be given to domestic students and international students already in Canada or able to obtain a visa before June 2026.
