About this position
Leiden University is offering two full-time PhD positions in the four-year CRISP project, Cocreating Research to Improve Science for Policy, based at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs and Institute of Public Administration in The Hague, Netherlands.
The project investigates how research-based knowledge can be better used in policymaking. One PhD project examines science for policy through the perspective of policy workers, including their evidence-informed working practices, barriers to evidence use, practical toolkits, and the policy impact of behavioral advisors in the Dutch government. The second studies how science-for-policy arrangements are organized and how organizational design can strengthen evidence use in policymaking. Both projects involve literature reviews, analysis of practice documents, empirical research, co-creation with government and other practice partners, and practice-oriented recommendations.
Applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Public Policy, Organisation Studies, Science and Technology Studies, or a related interdisciplinary field. Strong qualitative and quantitative social science research methods, analytical ability, communication skills, interdisciplinary interest, excellent English, and sufficient Dutch or willingness to learn Dutch are expected.
Successful candidates receive a four-year employment contract, doctoral training and professional supervision, a gross monthly salary of €3,240–€4,051, pension and other Dutch university employment benefits. Applications require a cover letter, CV with two referees, writing sample, grade transcripts, and supporting documents. The deadline is 3 December 2026; the intended start is in the first quarter of 2027.
