About this position
Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University is offering a two-year, 0.8 FTE postdoctoral position in the Department of People and Organisations. The postdoctoral researcher will work with Dr Rebecca (Bex) Hewett on a longitudinal project conducted with the Social Innovation Academy (SINA), a network supporting disadvantaged young people to become social entrepreneurs.
The project offers scope to investigate democratic organisation and participation, young people's learning processes, community dynamics, social entrepreneurship, decentralised organising, process and system dynamics, and the broader social and institutional context of SINA. Fieldwork may take place at SINA academies across multiple African countries, Nepal and Germany, while the postdoctoral researcher will be based at Campus Woudestein in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Candidates should hold a doctorate in management, organisation studies, sociology, anthropology, political economy or a related qualitative social science discipline. The PhD must have used ethnographic methods, and applicants should have experience with observation, interviews, field-note taking, archival records, qualitative analysis, theory development and academic writing. Researchers in the final year of their dissertation may apply if they have a clear completion plan.
The position provides methodological support and freedom to develop an independent research trajectory, with opportunities for conference presentations, high-impact journal publications, practical recommendations for SINA and broader societal impact. It is a paid temporary appointment at 0.8 FTE for two years, starting in early 2027, with salary and benefits under the Dutch Universities Collective Labour Agreement. Applications require a CV, cover letter, job market paper, research statement connecting prior experience to SINA, and three recommendation letters. The deadline is 30 November 2026.
