About this position
This internship is hosted by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD), the Department of Defense’s lead laboratory for medical chemical defense research, within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command. The project centers on in-vivo neuroscience research, giving the intern a chance to study the nervous system in living organisms and observe brain activity, behavior, and physiological processes in an intact, functioning brain.
The selected intern will work under the guidance of a mentor in a research environment that combines neuroscience with animal-based experimental methods. The experience includes hands-on exposure to small- and large-animal behavioral assessment, physiological monitoring, surgical EEG-lead implantation, data management, statistical analysis, and research study design. The appointment also offers the opportunity to learn animal anatomy and physiology, assist with dissection of tissue, and help describe experimental methods and results for scientific publication or conference presentation.
USAMRICD’s broader scientific environment spans chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, neuroscience, toxicology, physiology, psychology, and immunology. The internship is part of the ORISE research participation program administered for DoD, and participants are affiliated through ORISE for the appointment.
The opportunity is based in Edgewood, Maryland.
