About this position
The University of Edinburgh’s School of Divinity invites applications for the World Christianity PhD and MPhil programmes beginning in September 2027. The research area explores Asian, African and Latin American Christian theologies, Christian history, missions, Pentecostalism, contextualisation, diaspora and Christianity’s engagement with other religious traditions.
Students develop an independent research project with supervision from academic specialists connected to the Centre for the Study of World Christianity. Potential supervisors include Dr Alexander Chow, Prof Emma Wild-Wood, Dr Pedro Feitoza and Dr Kirsteen Murray. Research may address Christian communities and theologies in the majority world, new missionary movements from the Global South, inculturation, ethnicity, gender or interfaith relations.
The full-time MPhil lasts two years and normally involves a thesis of up to 60,000 words. The full-time PhD lasts three years and involves a thesis of up to 100,000 words; a six-year part-time PhD and distance study option are also available. Applicants should be prepared for independent research, academic writing in English and any specialist languages or skills required by their topic.
MPhil applicants generally need a relevant UK 2:1 degree or equivalent. PhD applicants generally need a relevant UK 2:1 degree or equivalent plus a strong relevant master’s degree with a research dissertation. Applications require a research proposal, two references, a 3,000–5,000-word writing sample, transcripts, degree certificates, personal statement and evidence of English-language proficiency.
The application deadline is 30 August 2027, for a programme start date of 13 September 2027. Applicants should contact a potential supervisor before submitting the formal online application. Divinity scholarships may cover full PhD fees and provide a stipend, but awards are competitive and funding is not automatic.
