About this position

The Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility at The New School is offering a one-year postdoctoral fellowship for the 2027–2028 academic year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The fellowship is designed for an early-career scholar whose work examines migration and mobility in broad political, social, legal, historical, philosophical, economic, and global contexts.

The Institute is especially interested in candidates whose research engages law and legal studies and places legal questions in conversation with migration and mobility. The advertised research areas include citizenship and nationality, borders and territoriality, migration governance, international law, human rights, constitutionalism, refugee and asylum law, colonialism and empire, race and inequality, international institutions, and global order.

The Fellow will have time to pursue an independent research agenda while participating in the intellectual life of the Institute and the wider university. This includes seminars, workshops, conferences, and public programming, as well as engagement with scholars across The New School.

The appointment also includes teaching a foundational undergraduate lecture course, Law and Social Change, for the university’s minor in the same area. The course frames law as a critical and interdisciplinary institution shaped by wider social and political forces, and the total teaching load is limited across the fellowship period.

The fellowship is based at The New School in New York City, within a research and policy environment that emphasizes interdisciplinary exchange and public-facing scholarship on migration, mobility, and legal change.

Funding details

Salary range: $55,000-$60,000 per annum for the fellowship appointment.

What's required

Applicants must have completed a PhD or equivalent research doctorate by the beginning of the appointment. Candidates should have a strong research agenda relating to migration and mobility, with interests that may include global politics, citizenship and membership, borders and international order, displacement and mobility, international law, rights, and the institutions and political processes shaping movement across borders. Scholarly expertise in law or legal studies is required, demonstrated through research, teaching, publications, or doctoral training. An interest in interdisciplinary scholarship, engagement with audiences beyond the primary discipline, and active participation in the intellectual and public-facing life of the Zolberg Institute are expected.
