Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences

This PhD position at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, offers an exciting opportunity to join a cutting-edge research project focused on the structural and functional analysis of toxic RNA-protein interactions in the context of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The project, funded by the National Science Center (UMO-2024/55/I/NZ5/02887), is part of the OPUS-28 (LAP) initiative and is conducted in close collaboration with Prof. Boris Rogelj's group at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The research aims to address critical gaps in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying ALS and FTD, particularly the role of 'toxic' RNA molecules and their interactions with aggregation-prone proteins in nerve cells. Despite extensive studies and the identification of numerous proteins involved, the atomic-level details of these complexes remain elusive. The project will employ interdisciplinary approaches, including cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), crystallography, biophysical and biochemical methods, and functional studies in human cell models, to unravel these mechanisms and explore therapeutic strategies. PhD students will receive a competitive stipend of approximately 4300 PLN gross (3800 PLN net) per month for 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to 48 months and an increase to 5590 PLN gross after mid-term evaluation. Additional benefits include social insurance, access to a Multisport card, group insurance, and social benefits such as co-financing of holiday leave and cultural event tickets. Applicants should hold an MSc degree in chemistry, biology, or a related field, or meet the legal requirements for doctoral studies in Poland. Experience in laboratory work with nucleic acids and/or protein biology and chemistry is essential, along with knowledge of biomolecule properties, biochemical processes, and molecular biology techniques. Experience in structural biology or chemistry is highly valued. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. The application process involves submitting an application via the eRecruiter portal, including all required documents: application form, diploma or graduation certificate, scientific CV, cover letter, certificates of English proficiency (if available), and contact details for references. For candidates with foreign diplomas, recognition procedures should be followed as outlined on the NAWA website. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2026, and the recruitment results will be announced on the PDS IPAS website. For further information, candidates may contact the Principal Investigator, Associate Professor Agnieszka Kiliszek, at [email protected]. This position is ideal for motivated candidates interested in neurodegeneration, molecular biology, and advanced structural techniques, offering the chance to contribute to high-impact research in a collaborative international environment.

Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher (assistant professor) position in the Department of RNA Structural Research. This opportunity is part of the OPUS-28 (LAP) project, conducted in close collaboration with Prof. Boris Rogelj's group at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana. The project, led by Associate Professor Agnieszka Kiliszek, focuses on the comprehensive structural and functional analysis of toxic RNA–protein interactions to advance understanding and therapeutic targeting of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The research aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying ALS and FTD, particularly the role of 'toxic' RNA molecules and their interactions with proteins that contribute to nerve cell dysfunction and death. Despite extensive studies, the atomic-level details of these RNA–protein complexes remain unknown, representing a significant knowledge gap in the field. The project employs interdisciplinary approaches, including structural biology (cryo-electron microscopy, crystallography), biophysical and biochemical methods, and functional studies in human cells. The anticipated outcomes have high potential for publication in leading scientific journals and for contributing to therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases. The position offers a competitive gross salary of approximately 9,450 PLN per month for a period of 48 months, with employment governed by the Polish Labor Code. The successful candidate will design and conduct experimental work, prepare RNA–protein complexes for structural and functional analysis, perform biophysical and biochemical evaluations, and participate in crystallographic or cryo-EM studies. Additional responsibilities include processing and interpreting results, preparing scientific reports and publications, supervising students or PhD candidates, and presenting findings at scientific meetings. Applicants must hold a PhD in biology, chemistry, or a related discipline, with a strong publication record and experience in biophysical and biochemical evaluation of biomolecules. Proficiency in English and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. Experience in crystallography or cryoEM is advantageous but not mandatory. Eligibility is subject to NCN requirements regarding the timing and location of the doctoral degree and postdoctoral experience. To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, copy of doctoral diploma, and contact details for at least two referees via the eRecruiter portal by 26 January 2026. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview, with final decisions based on research output, relevant experience, and internships. For further information, contact Assoc. Prof. Agnieszka Kiliszek at [email protected].
